Mountains to Mountains

On Thursday September 6, Appalachian State University put together a presentation called Mountains to Mountains about a trip that took place in Nepal following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that truly devastated the country. The earthquake took place on April 25 of 2015. When it struck, it left damages that would take years upon years to fix. Nearly 9000 people lost their lives to this atrocity. The unfortunate part about this is Nepal is not a very wealthy country and was already having economic issues. Once they earthquake hit it left the country in even more shock with questions how they could possibly rebuild after this natural disaster. This is where the organization Wine to Water came into play.

Wine to Water is an organization founded by Doc Hendley who's purpose is to stop the world water crisis. They help all over the world but in this case it was a little different. An Appalachian student and professor who were both from Nepal stepped forward eager to help out after the earthquake struck their home country. They talked with University resources and got linked with Wine to Water. Once this was the case they headed out to Nepal loaded up with water purifiers in order to start making an impact on the water crisis. Upon arrival, they realized that the inhabitants of the village had to walk at least 30 miles to the nearest clean water resource. Children would make the journey and sacrifice just so their family could have clean water for the day. They knew that changes had to be made so that water was much more accessible. After digging ditches and installing miles of pipe to the village, clean water was then available within the village. It was a long journey that took blood sweat and tears but every helper said that the results of their hard work overpowered the grueling work they underwent. It was truly a life changing event as explained by the workers.

Overall this presentation was very heart warming and it opened up my eyes to work that can be done across the globe. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a nice place to live and clean water to drink just steps away. I was hesitant about the presentation because I wasn't aware what it was going to be about but after going to it, I would go again. It was an amazing story that toughed the lives of thousands upon thousands of people in Nepal.
